Oxygen Electronics Takes Third in Around Long Island Sailing Regatta
For immediate release - Thursday, July 26, 2001Every year sailors and crew in the New England area spend the fall, winter, and spring months patiently waiting for the start of the Around Long Island Race which attracts more than 100 different yachts and 500 crew members. The ALIR race covers approximately 190 nautical miles over two to three days. This year Oxygen Electronics, in the wake of the Paris-Dakar sponsorship, chose to enter a team of sailors to participate in this Regatta.
On July 26th, Didier Bachaumard, Brad Grovich, Kathleen Ferguson, and Mark Pasdon crossed the starting line off the Southwestern coast of Long Island and began to sail East in 30+ knot winds and seven foot seas on what proved to be a test of stamina and strategy. About 30 hours later Team Oxygen rounded Montauk Point at approximately 18:45 in light winds and comfortable seas. From Montauk Point the course turns Northwesterly heading for Long Island Sound. Team Oxygen eventually crossed the finish line at approximately 19:35 on Saturday July 28th.
Much to the surprise of Team Oxygen, Oxygen Electronics finished Third in Division One and Fifth in their class. Based on this performance, Team Oxygen expects to participate in future Regattas and continue its commitment to sponsoring adventure sports.
